If you define philosophy as ‘the pursuit of truth using reason and evidence’, then the question being asked is “Is the pursuit of truth using reason and evidence stupid?”

Science is a branch of philosophy….. maybe we could call it ‘technical philosophy’ (as opposed to, say, moral philosophy).

If (as Hawking suggests) philosophy appears to be dead (redundant), it’s most probably because it is providing the ‘wrong’ answers.

The entire social order of western civilisation for the last few thousand years can be exposed as non-rational, inconsistent and completely immoral in little more than a paragraph of philosophical reasoning. It’s not that philosophy has come to a standstill, it’s that applying basic reason and evidence to our world would result in a complete restructuring of society.

Philosophy is, by definition, incapable of being stupid. Only people can be stupid.
